Urban Fathers' Liberation Front

Confused dads working out the city

Expecting a second

My wife is expecting a second child in about two weeks.  When we had our first, there was a lot of support for both new parents.  We were welcomed into classes, and husbands were more than welcome to come along and learn all about parenthood with the mum.  Whilst there was far less literature aimed at fathers (and boy, did you have to search for it, and gosh wasn’t it tedious stuff when you did find it), fathers were at least seen as part of the furniture.

Second time round, there has been a lot less emphasis on the birth for the father.  Whilst the appointments and checks go on for the mother, quite rightly, there are no groups, no NCT classes and for a number of refreshers my wife has checked out to go over the procedures, fathers have occasionally not been welcome.

As it happens, I’m not a genius, and I’m equally apprehensive about impending fatherhood for the second time.  It would be nice to have the option of a refresher, should I feel I need it.  Fathers are part of the family unit as well you know!
